Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• HGV1 drivers are workshy, preferring to draw dole rather than take jobs, according to a hard-pressed director of a haulage company.

Thurrock-based Motorway Transport boss Tony Salter says that when he has placed vacancies for HGV Class 1 drivers with the DSS employment office there have been no takers. "Yet when I ring the dole office they say they have HGV 1 drivers drawing dole," he says. "I believe they prefer to get their money by signing on the dotted line rather than working."

He is seeking at least five HGV Class 1 drivers to deliver containers from Felixstowe throughout the UK. Net pay is 1250 to £300 for a standard driving week. Salter can be contacted on (0708) 869848.

A DSS spokesman says it is up to unemployed people to apply for its vacancies, but regular checks are carried out to ensure that they are trying to find jobs.

111 PPS Management is seeking 100 HGV 1 drivers for employers in the South-East and Birmingham. Hourly rates are £5 and up to £8 at night. Mike Mitchell of PPS says demand for HGV 1 drivers is "almost limitless at the moment". He can be contacted on (0322) 281568.

LI In Wood Green, North London, Staff UK is looking for HGVIs to drive refrigerated containers from Willesden. The rates are £5.50 for the first 50 hours, £6.50 thereafter and £17.64 for nights out. Some permanent jobs are available.
