Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Caterpillar's new 3100 or "1.1" series of engines has made its debut in the UK with the six-cylinder version in preproduction form, and the fourcylinder version planned for production in early summer next year.

The in-line DI diesels have a capacity of 1,100cc per cylinder, hence the title "1.1". The 3116 engine, shown at the Royal Smithfield Show, has a capacity of 6.6 litres. It gives 142kW (190hp) in standard turbocharged form, and 157kW (210hp) in turbocharged and charge-cooled form. The engine uses roller rockers and unit fuel injectors. It weighs 492kg, and a power take-off facility is standard on all models.

The four-cylinder engine is similar to the six-cylinder and gives 93kW (125hp) in tur

bocharged form, and 104kW (1 40hp) in turbocharged chargecooled form. The four-cylinder unit is expected to cost around 22,500 to orginal-equipment manufacturers.

Initial production will come from Caterpillar's engine factory at Gosselies in Belgium, although components will be sourced from various plants in Europe.

The new engines will be aimed at the light-truck sector as well as the marine and industrial markets, and could also offer tough competition for the Perkins Phaser series of engines that have recently been uprated to around 150kW (200hp) for specialist applications. Potential customers for the units include truck builder AWD, which is currently talking to Caterpillar.
