• New registrations of maximum-weight artics in October were up 38% on October 1987: CVs over 1.5 tonnes were up 21%. In the 12 months to October, registrations of all goods vehicles were 18% with maximum-weight HGVs up 32%.

• Roads and Traffic Minister Peter Bottomley, speaking at the opening of a weighbridge off the Al at Sawtry near Peterborough, has slammed overloaded trucks as dangerous to other motorists and damaging to roads and bridges.

• Daf BV president Aart van der Padt handed over the first British-built Leyland Daf 1900 to Robson Distribution managing director Simon Banger on Tuesday of this week. Next year, says van der Padt, Leyland Daf will build 1,000 right-hand-drive 1900s in the UK.
