rINE of the most interesting devices ‘.../used in modern building operations is the power rammer, and we illustrate the latest of this type. It is the Pegson self-contained, magneto-operated machine, made by Pegsou, Ltd., Coalville, Leicester, and it appears to be a great improvement upon the battery and trembler coil type, in which these components were carried on the back of the operative.
It is claimed that one man operating a Pegson rammer can definitely consolidate the amount of filling that six men can shovel into a trench, and the work
• is done so much better that the amount of material left over after filling in an excavation is considerably reduced, thus saving transport. With band ramming it is often necessary to albw several months for sinking. The machine is a type of internalcombustion engine utilizing any ordinary fuel, including benzole mixture. By depressing the handle bars, a full charge of gas is drawn into the cylinder, and upon raising the handle bars to the top of the stroke the magneto is tripped, thus firing the charge and lifting the, machine into the air. Almost any degree of stroke pressure within the limits of the machine can be made, this depending entirely upon the pressure of the hands upon the bars. When working, the action is practically automatic, and the speed can be as high as SO blows per minute. The running costs are said to be under 2d. per hour. The fuel supply is contained in the hollow foot of the machine, and the cylinder is well finned to give adequate cooling.
