Dealing with the future of the road motor vehicle at a meeting of the members of the Royal Scottish Society of Arts in Edinburgh, at which Mr. R. Stuart Pitcher presided, Sir John B. Thorn ycroft, K.B.B., M.I.N.A., said that we were only at the beginning of the employment of vehicles on roads for goods and passenger-carrying, and emphasized the fact that passenger vehicles would he increasingly used as feeders for railway and tramway services.
Sir John spoke of a recent visit which he made to America, when he travelled in many new buses at speeds of from 40 m.p.h. to 50 m.p.h., and mentioned that on one route an average speed of 35 m.p.h. was maintained in spite of half a dozen stops being made. Following up this point, he said that in this country we have no roads for such high-speed buses, but, if we had, British manufacturers could supply the vehicles.
