• Onix Technology claims its new vehicle security system, Rig-Guard, could help hauliers combat the growing problems of theft and illegal immigrants.

Rig-Guard features antivandal, slash-proof side curtains that cannot be opened from either side unless disconnected from the alarm.

It also has an acoustic microphone system mounted in the trailer to enable the driver to listen for stowaways, while a laser beam between the tractor and trailer protects the trailer roof area and the driver also has a panic button for personal security.

The system is linked to a radio pager, which works up to a mile away from the vehicle. This shows each individual event or activation, forewarning the driver of the exact danger areas before returning to the vehicle.

Richard Horsfall, managing director of haulier Unitruc, which has been testing the system across Europe, says: "While we were sceptical about the benefits at first, Rig-Guard has proved to be an excellent system. It would be particularly beneficial to protect high value loads."

The system, complete with curtains, costs from 14,500 or can be leased on a range of yearly options.
