Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IIII 2F is set to extend its ASTronic automated transmission line-up with a new version aimed at lightweight tractor units and urban distribution trucks.

The new transmission, which uses a single lay shaft design rather than the twin lay shaft set-up currently used, is some 60kg lighter than the current 12AS2301 as used by MAN in the TG-A and is physically smaller, improving chassis packaging.

The German transmission maker will unveil the new gearbox at the Hanover international truck show in September, though the company doesn't expect it to go into series production until 2004. most likely in an MAN chassis.

While the new 12-speed AS Tronic continues 7F's design philosophy that auto-boxes need to be developed as stand-alone units and not bolt-ons to existing manual transmissions, a new six-speed AS-Tronic, called the 6AS800, appears to mark something of a U-turn in policy.

This six-speed two-pedaller—due for production in the second half of 2004—is based on the current 6S850, as used by Oaf on the CF65, and effectively has a bolt-on auto-change system on the side of the gearbox.

ZF doesn't expect massive demand for auto transmissions in this sector and as a result isn't prepared at this stage to go to the expense of bringing out a dedicated six-speed auto.
