Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• by Jennifer Ball Councillors have banned trucks from parking on the roadside at two Kent business parks after complaints from a number of residents and local businesses about the noise, rubbish and damage to property by drivers.

The Kent and Ashford Transport Board says that lorries will be forbidden from parking at all times on roundabouts and junctions and at night on both the OrMal Business Park and Ashford Business Park estates.

One international driver from Ashford says: "I have seen Willi Betz trucks parked on this estate for days at a time. Last week there were around 26 there for five days. A number of Turkish and Eastern block drivers also use this as a holding bay while waiting for loads. This is the gateway to Europe so they should be providing proper facilities for drivers."

Sarah Watkins, FTA regional policy manager, agrees: "It is understandable if they are stop

ping lorry parking for publii health reasons. However, thi, highlights the lack of facilitie: and the urgent need to provith safe and clean lorry paridn1 close to Channel ports. Driven need to take breaks and this wil be exacerbated with the intro duction of the Working iiME Directive. There has also been z growth in the number of foreigr hauliers in the UK."

• The council is also proposint to consult with the Highways Agency over the "disbenefrts" al Operation Stack, where trucks are lined up along the M20 when there is a problem at the ports or the Channel Tunnel.
