READABLE, lively historical IX accounts of the motor industry are the forte of Mr. St. John C. Nixon, whose latest volume, " The Story of the S.M.M.T., 1902-1952" has been published Rs part of the jubilee celebrations of the Society•of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

Giving an account of the work of the Society throughout its first haff-century of existence, this book is complementary to other narratives of the development of the British motor industry and provides background information of the evolution of this now vital branch of Britain's industrial effort.

Without pretending to be an exhaustive year-by-year statement of the Society's extensive activities, the book succeeds in depicting the events which led to its forniation, the services which it has provided and the growth of. its influence.

It succeeds, too, in revealing the part played by the 'leading personalities of the Society in the establishment of the motor industry from the first days. As a record of the deeds of the pioneers and of the difficulties through which they steered the Society and its members, the book is a valuable addition to the records of the industry.

As the author points out in his conclusion: "The formation of the Society had a swift and far-reaching effect; the motor industry was soon placed on a higher plane, where it has been able to hammer out its own salvation and . . . make a vast contribution to the national welfare." It is fitting that this contribution should be so well-recorded for posterity.
