Designed in 1939, it was held in "cold storage" fot the duration of war before the prototype was built in the workshops at Edmonton. By this time a new site had been found to put the Proctor on a production basis. The prototype was freely used in the move to the new site of Procter Springwood, Ltd., at Mousehold, Norwich, putting up such a good performance that only two slight modifications were made before the first chassis was produced.

The Proctor, fitted with cab and 18-in. drop-sided body, weighs under 3 tons and is within the unladen-weight limit for a maximum speed of 30 m.p.h. A 1,100 cubic-ft. Luton-type body, in course of production, will be within the same weight limit when fitted to the production chassis.

It is considered that an experimental all-alurniniam body of the same capacity now being constructed will also be within the 3-ton class.

The Perkins P6 oil engine and a Moss four-speed gearbox, with an overdrive ratio of 0.818 to I, provide a maximum speed in excess of 40 m.p.h. Lockheed servo brakes operating in large-diameter wheel-drums have produced some interesting braking figures for "The Commercial Motor" road test, which will be reported in next week's issue.

rE Association is deeply offended at the Lord Chancellor's insinuation that road hauliers might deliberately burn or destroy their records to defeat the purpose of the Act.

"It is an unwarranted aspersion on an honest and decent body of men and on an industry which has contributed so much to the country."

Such is the vigorous tone of a statement sent to the Press by the Road Haulage Association, following the observations of Viscount lowitt in the House of Lords on July 29 (see page 46).

G.P.O. LIGHTENS LOAD ON RAIL CRESH light is thrown on the opera' dons of the new G.P.O. road haulage fleet in a report from the G.P.O. Press office. The service of 200 3-ton to 10-ton vehicles results from a decision that Government Departments should carry as much goods traffic as possible by road.

Effect of the service will be door-todoor delivery of the bulk of the engineering stores hitherto sent by rail. The special haulage pool will be operated by Col. A. G. McDonald, chief motor transport officer.

JOINT OPERATION APPROVED

AN application by Preston Corporation to operate joint services outside . the borough in co-ordination with Scout Motor Services, Ltd., and Ribble Motor. Services, Ltd., has been granted by the North-Western Traffic Commssioners.
