LAST week the Minister of Transport received a deputation from the British Road Federation, deprecating the decision to limit grants from the Road

Fund for highway maintenance. , Led by Mr. R. Gresham Cooke, MA.

(director, Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders), the deputation consisted of Mr. W. P. Andrews (Cement and Concrete Association), Mr. H. M.

Lewis (Limestone Federation), Major R. A. B. Smith (Road Haulage Association and Passenger Vehicle Operators' Asociation), and Mr. A. G. Wright (National Farmers' Union).

The B.R.F. felt that the reduction was a retrograde step, because of the handicaps imposed on road transport, depreciation of vehicles, and accelerated depreciation of the capital invested in the roads. Arrears must eventually be made up, after years of war and the recent hard winter, and undue delay would lead to an inevitable increase in cost. The Government should imple, ment the first stage of the 1946 Ten Year Plan.

The Minister expressed his sympathy, but said the roads could not escape results of the ezonomic situation.
