CM COVER STORY DIABETIC drivers desperately waiting for the UK to comply with European laws that overturn a blanket ban on them driving HG Vs say their enquiries about progress are being met with stony silence.
And with just four months to go before the final deadline is reached for introducing individual medical assessments for truck drivers suffering from the condition. the DVLA is unable to give CM any information about how it is preparing for the huge changes either.
The government's medical advisory panel met last month to discuss how a network of diabetologists would be established and what the health service thinks about the amendments.
But the DVLA is unwilling to comment on the exact content of this meeting until the minutes are published — which could take months. Driver Archie, Meechan says he has been frustrated at the lack of response to his requests for information. "1 have sent an email to the Secretary of State for Transport, asking for copies of the minutes to the meeting,he says.
"I keep sending out letters every week to the DVLA asking what's going on. My consultant [diabetologist] says nothing is happening at the moment."
