• Type approval of replacement CV brake linings is to be introduced across Europe, an IMechE braking conference heard. The regulations will be based on ECE regulation 90 covering replacement brcke shoes and disc brake pad assemblies for passenger cars, which will cover cars first registered after 1 Jan 1994.
Under the regulations replacement shoes and pads must, within tolerances, match the performance of the linings fitted when the vehicle was type approved. By this means the quality of the linings can be regulated without restricting the number of suppliers—a move that has been welcomed by the industry.
The DOT and the friction lining manufacturers are scheduled to meet later this year to discuss similar legislation on CV, although implementation is several years away.
On the CV side the legislation is expected to cover lining material and not the assembly to allow for the supply of loose linings. The regulations will not apply to other areas of the brakes such as replacement drums and discs.
