the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., to revise fares. Kent County Council and 22 local authorities opposed the application, which will bring in another £120,000 a year. Details of the proposals were reported in The Commercial Motor on March 4.

Proposals to increase their fares to bring in a total of £117,763 were made recently by three large Midland bus operators to the East Midland Licensing Authority. The applicants were Trent Motor Traction Co., Ltd., whose application was for 158,000; Midland General Omnibus Co., Ltd. (£27,360), and East Midland Motor Services, Ltd. (132,403).

Decision was reserved.

When Stratford upon Avon Blue Motors, Ltd., applied to the West Midland Licensing Authority on Monday for permission to increase fares, the general manager, Mr. W. Agg, said that 50 per cent, of their services would be running under cost even if the application were successful. At present, more than half the mileage run was unremunerative.

Mr. P. E. R. English, for the company, said that unless their proposals were accepted the percentage of unrcmunerative mileage would increase sharply, and they would have to consider whether it would be practicable to continue these services.

If the fuel tax were lowered in the Budget, the company would try to reduce fares in proportion, Mr. English told an objector.

Among the four objectors, which included two local councils, was the National Union of Agricultural Workers.

Decision was reserved.

This month's meeting of Ipswich Town Council will be asked to approve fare proposals designed to yield an extra 127,260 a year. The increases recommended by the transport committee are id. on 2-Id.-4d. rates, and Id. on half the 5d. fares and on all those at 6d. The committee report that

the estimated deficit on the transport department during 1955-56 is 126,540.

A children's minimum rate of lid. is listed among proposals for higher rates made by the Eastern National Omnibus Co., Ltd., and Southend Corporation, in the current issue of Notices and Proceedings for the Eastern Traffic Area.

Twelve local authorities are to oppose the application for higher fares made by East Yorkshire Motor Services, Ltd., details of which were given in The Commercial Motor on March 4.

Intended opposition by local councils to proposals made by the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co., Ltd. (The Commercial Motor, February 25), has been withdrawn as a result of a concession agreed by the company. No increase will be sought on 2d. single fares up to a distance of 1 miles.
