EMPLOYEES in the motor-vehicle retail and repairing trade have been granted substantial pay increases under an agreement reached by the National Joint Industrial Council for the industry. The new rates, which were operative from the first full pay period following March 28, are: Skilled male workers in London, £8 3s. 2d. a week (provinces, £7 19s. 6d.)—an increase of 1 Is.; semiskilled, London, £7 8s. 6d. (£7 4s. 10d.) —9s. 2d.; others, London, £6 16s. 7d. (£6 I2s. I Id.)-8s. 3d. The increase for women is 7s. 4d. a week. Supply drivers employed by T. Wall and Sons, Ltd., have had their wages raised by 8s. a week, retrospective to January 10. Another 10s. a week with percentage advances for juniors, is being paid from March 28 to transport workers in the iron, steel and non-ferrous scrap industry. Agreement has been reached with the Co-operative Wholesale Society by the Transport and General Workers' Union on adjustments to their national transport agreement. The C.W.S. have agreed to make an offer of increases varying between-9s. and 12s. a week, according to classification. The proposals include the discontinuance of existing tonnage-and-empties bonus schemes which are operative at some centres. Protective clothing will also be issued to transport employees. A revised agreement, operative from February 25, under which adult workers willareceive an increase of 10s. a week, with proportionate amounts for juniors, has been made with Pease Transport, Ltd., the road transport organization of Tate and Lyle, Ltd. An additional 2d. an hour on the night rate has also been agreed.
