A CONFERENCE to discuss alleged
inadequate bus services in North Northumberland and on Tweedside was held at Berwick last week. Representatives of local authorities contended that people living in country areas were more isolated now, because of the lack of buses, than at any time in the past 30 years.
Farm workers submitted a petition calling for better services, and Berwick and District Chamber of Trade said that lack of transport was having a bad effect on business.
Mr. D. S. Deacon, traffic manager of United Automobile Services, Ltd., said that just under 40 per cent. of the services operated by the company were not paying. The company, however, would consider any specific complaint put forward.
The conference appointed a subcommittee to prepare details of complaints.
Mr. H. W. A. Reach, clerk to the Northern .Licensing Authority. referred to the practice of private-car owners giving lifts to their friends, on account of which bus companies were losing .revenue.
