MR. P. R. BLAKE, who has been associated with the B.E.T. group for 44 years, is retiring on June 30 from his appointment as managing director of South Wales Transport Co., Ltd., and Swansea Improvements and Tramways Co., Ltd. He will, however, remain a director of both.

GOUGH, C.B., M.B.E., M.I.Mech.E., F.R.S., the new president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, will be welcomed by the reception committee of the Institution on May 31 at that body's summer meeting in Liverpool. He was superintendent of the National Physical Laboratory Engineering Department in 1930, and has received many honours and awards, including the Crompton Medal of the former Institution of Automobile Engineers. In 1938 he was the first Director of Scientific Research to the War Office, and in 1942 became Director-General of Scientific Research and Development to the Ministry of Supply. In 1945 he received his present aPpointment as engineer-inchief of Lever Brothers and Unilever, Ltd.
