Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

PRIVATE PARTY?.

AT Liverpool Police Court, last week, Mr. Henry James Jones, of Allerton, was accused of having, on February 19, caused a motor coach to be used as an express carriage between the Heath Hotel, Greenhill Road, Allerton, and Chorley, without obtaining a road service licence from the Traffic Commissioners. He pleaded not guilty.

For the Traffic Commissioners, Mr. D. H. Mace said the coach, with, four others, started from Queen's Hotel, Garston, called at the Heath Hotel, Allerton, and thence travelled to Chorley. A notice advertising the trip was displayed in the window of the Queen's Hotel, stating: "Lancashire Junior Cup, Saturday, February 19. Buses leave Queen's Hotel at 1.45 p.m. Fare 2s. 4d. Tickets obtained here." He contended that that was an invitation to the public to make the journey, and that it was not limited to a private Party. Mr. Jones, who organized the trip, received £14 18s. in fares, and the hire of the coaches cost him £12. Neither he nor the coach proprietor held a road service licence to operate between Garston and Chorley, according to the evidence given.

In defence, Mr. Jones said he was approached by supporters of the South Liverpool club to organize the trip and had no idea that there was any legal objection. The trip was for supporters. He added that he did not organize the' trip for personal gain_ Out of the balance of the money be had to provide tips for the drivers (8s. each) and refreshments for the party. There was the cost of several unsold tickets to be allowed for.

The Stipendiary found the case proved and imposed a fine of 42, whilst the hearing of summonses against the proprietor of the coaches was adjourned until April 22.
