DHL has won a £1.6bn deal to run the NHS supply chain for the next 10 years (CM 3 August).

The transport giant will provide logistics services to 600 hospitals across England, handling half a million products including food, bed linen, office equipment, stationery, cleaning products and medical equipment.

DHL will open a 23,000m= distribution centre, creating 1,(XX) jobs. Chief executive John Allan says that he is thrilled with the contract: "This contract is both good for staff and good for the NHS.

"We are committed to targeting savings on behalf of the Department of Health that can be directed back to patient care."

However, the move has sparked protests among NHS staff over what has been called the biggest NHS privatisation to date. The union Unison has balloted hospital staff on strike action; the result of this will he known next week.
