Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MAN has done more than most to harmonise the driving characteristics of its disparate products. Kevin Swallow has been driving a TGM 18-tonner that is heavily influenced by its big brothers.

When Renault relaunched its distribution range, we asked when a manufacturer would be brave enough to introduce automation across the board. The answer came from Germany: MAN had already done it.

Automation for distribution, or more likely collection, has always been the preserve of Allison and municipal vehicles. Truck and gearbox manufacturers have concentrated on getting the heavies ready for automation, but continual growth in power and torque outputs from smaller engines has allowed auto boxes to be offered further down the food chain.

This has enabled MAN to extend the harmonised appearance of its products to their driving characteristics. Sure, driving an MAN 18-tonner is physically different from driving an MAN 44-tonner, but in mind and spirit their handling is near identical.

The TGM range offers trucks from 13 to 26 tonnes, crossing paths with the heavier TGA at 18 and 26 tomes, but not with the smaller TGL which extends from 7.5 to 12 tonnes. There are three engine outputs, from 240 to 326hp; auto transmission is standard, with a nine-speed manual on the options list. You also get to choose between day, L (one-bunk) and LX (two-bunk) cabs.

Our TGM 18-tonner has the 240hp version of the D08 6.9-litre Euro-4 EGR lump driving through the standard 12-speed Tipmatic overdrive box. Its L cab adds 200kg to the kerb weight; speceing the manual transmission would save 37kg.Thc truck is on a 5.7m wheelbase and sports a curtainsider body with a Ratcliffe tail-lift. m
