TRUCK OR iVERS crossing the . Forth road bridge will be at the .5 forefront of testing new electronic payment technology which is due to be introduced over the coming months.
The bridge authorities will open electronic payment booths later in September, although at first the majority of drivers will still have to pay with cash or vouchers.
This delay is designed to allow the new technology to be roadtested.
Hauliers will be among the group of 200 regular bridge users involved in testing the 'e-tag system over the next few months.
Tolls will be automatically deducted from drivers' accounts as they pass the booths by monitoring smartcards which will be attached to their vehicles' windscreens.
Paying electronically will qualify drivers for the same discount as the current voucher scheme, which reduces the charge for trucks from £2 to £1.30.
A spokesman says: "We hope to have the new booths fully up and running by the end of the year, but we're prepared to wait longer than that if necessary. Experience on other tolled routes suggests that testing can sometimes take six to 12 months."
