• Container hauliers in the South-East could be loading out OT a new location if Pigi.0 gets approval to develop a massive container port on the site of a former oil refinery P8,0 wants to turn the Shell Haven oil refinery on the Thames estuary at Thurrock, Essex into a purpose-built container port capable of handling up to 10 vessels at once.
The 1,500-acre site would offer a 3km quay and the potential to handle 3.5 million units annually, creating up to 10,000 jobs. It could open by 2002.
MO chairman Lord Sterling says UK container ports will run out of capacity in the next three to five years: "For the country to benefit from its position at the heart of world trade we need a significant increase in container terminal facilities, and Shell Haven has this potential," he adds.
