Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

QMy query is in two parts. First, if a driver drives both HGVs and PSVs in the same day, how does he calculate his hours? Are they added together or counted quite separately?

Second, if an HGV or PSV instructor is supervising pupils but not touching the controls, who accumulates hours — the instructor or the pupil?

PG, Bedfordshire AWhen driving both HGV and PSV on the same day, if the PSV comes into the scope of EC regulations, then the hours are added together.

When you are under instruction you do not come into the scope of EC regulations as long as the vehicle is not used for the carriage of goods.

Some schools offer a sylla bus allowing trainees to drive loaded trailers and, as long as the load is not for Hire & Reward or the property of somebody else, then again there is not a requirement for tachographs.

However, a habit has crept in with some large companies to train drivers with an experienced driver and, while the trainee is not driving, no card is used. The Regulations clearly state that: "If the person is available for driving. . . then a second card must be in the tachograph."
