Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A FORWARD-ENTRANCE 30-ft.1-1. long 69-seat version of the Route

master double-decker will enter experimental service on some of London Transport's Central (red) bus routes later this year. As mentioned on page 68 of this issue, it will be exhibited on the Park Royal stand at the 'Commercial Motor Show.

The experimental bus, RMF 1254, is basically similar to the RML 30-ft. rearentrance version of the Routemaster so far as dimensions and general structural design are concerned. The wheelbase is 19 ft. 2 in., and the additional length, as compared to the standard 2741. 7-in.-long RM Routemaster, is given by adding a short bay amidships, together with an additional short propeller shaft and other minor modifications to the A.E.C. mechanical units.

To compensate for the removal of part

of the side framing to form the entrance immediately behind the nearside front wheel, the side framing of the upper saloon in this 'region is strengthened to carry he extra weight caused by the additional seats and passengers transferred from the front.

This modified weight distribution has necessitated the use of stronger coil springs for the rear axle, hut has allowed the front wheels to be fitted With 9.00-20 tyres as is usual on London Transport double-deckers. The 30-ft. rear-entrance ROutemasters have 10,00-20 front tyres.

The two-step,passenger entrance is fitted with ,electrically -operated double jack-knife doors, These are normally to he opened by the driver and closed by either driver or conductor, but emergency control buttons are provided inside and out. The vehicle seats 38 on the upper deck and 31 on the lower deck.
