Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CIIESHIRE County Council has recently taken delivery of two fire tenders based on Tharnycroft Nubian four-wheel-drive chassis, powered by Rolls-Royce B.80 eight-cylindered petrol engines. With these outfits, not only can fires be reached over most difficult ground, but road speeds of up to 60 mph. an be attained. The chassis has a four-speed main gearbox and a two-speed transfer box. With four-wheel drive engaged, the transfer box provides a further reduction in gear ratio of 2.26 to 1, so that eight forward speeds are available through the main gearbox.

Each axle is fitted with a bevel dif

ferential, the wheel hubs incorporating epicyclic reduction gears driven from the axle shafts.

The local Thornycroft distributor, Carmichael and Sons (Worcester), Ltd., was responsible for the fire-tender body and its equipment, which are constructed to the current Home Office tire-tender specification. .

A Sigmund demountable pump is carried on the rear platform, where it can be coupled to the two main water tanks, each of 250-gallon capacity. A Martin Harper power take-off on the gearbox drives a first-aid pump, the output of which is 25 g.p.m.

The suction hose is stored above the

Sigmundpump, whilst the long-handle tools, hook ladder and short ladder are accommodated in lockers running along each side of the body.

Each machine carries a crew of six. In view of the relative movement between the cab and body when rough ground is being traversed, the cab is separately mounted; All controls for the engine, pump and hose-reel are situated at the rear.

These vehicles were recently subjected to severe tests over treacherous surfaces having gradients up to one in four. The performance of -the Nubian under these adverse conditions was in every way satisfactory.
