Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Late arriving parts from chassis-makers and early forward planning for Christmas have contributed to a slower-than-usual September market.

The usual growth at the auctions experienced through September as operators replace their stock has failed to materialise. The problem seems lobe a delay caused by manufacturers, which have failed to provide new chassis to fill some major orders, says Manheim Auctions national HGV and plant manager Jeremy Martell.

While business has continued to be steady, the usual influx of motors is yet to boost what has already been a good year for the company,he says.

The delay is compounded by operators holding on to vehicles ahead of the Christmas rush. B ut,Martell says, Manheim could well see a big rise in trade through the auctions in midOctober.

Export is performing strongly, with Russia proving a popular destination. Most vehicles heading to the former-Soviet Union are pre electronic trucks dating from 1996 and 1997, although Martell has seen them snap up the odd 1998 model.

By and large it's the clean and tidy stock that is performing most strongly. The last sale in Leeds saw a broad mix of stock through from 7.5-tonners to tractors, as well as couple of coaches chucked in for good measure. Initial prices on a Mercedes-Benz Cheetah coach were pessimistic. as it turned out.

There was a good stock of ejector/push out trailers up for grabs, ranging from 1991 aluminium tandems to a 2001-plated one that went for £17,000 (ex-VAT).

Municipal products continue to perform well in Leeds, while several 18-tonne rigids and 26tonners with tag axles were snapped up, again anticipating the Christmas trade. These include some on a Daf chassis up to seven years old. •
