• The number of fatal road accidents involving heavy trucks has fallen 28% over the past 10 years. Trucks were involved in 533 fatal accidents in 2003, compared with 681 in 1993. The number of light goods vehicles involved in fatal accidents fell 79 from 34110 320 during the same period.
• In 2002, 88% of HGVs exceeded the 50mph limit on dual carriageways; the same as in 2001. On single carriageways. 68% of HGVs exceeded the 40mph limit — down from 76% in 2001 —and 15% were travelling faster than 50mph. compared with 28% in 2001.
