• A light haulage company is changing its fuel card supplier after it was charged for 548 litres of fuel after filling up one of its vans.

Graeme Walker, who owns Rotherham-based About Britain. claims that one of his drivers failed to spot the amount of fuel he had been charged for last July at Strensham Motorway Services in Tewkesbury. He signed the receipt although his van's maximum fuel capacity is about 70 litres.

When Walker complained to Dieseline, the fuel card supplier, it accepted that the amount was inconsistent with About Britain's usual spending pattern and asked its site agent, CH Janes, to check its records.

CH Jones checked with Roadchef but found no discrepancies with the amount drawn that day, so Walker had to pay £345 instead of the usual £40. "Dieseline asked me if I was sure the driver didn't have an extra tank in the back of the van," says Walker. "But I asked them if they had any idea how big that would have to be-5O0 litres is absolutely ridiculous."

Rebecca Long, sales and customer services supervisor for Dieseline, says the company has done everything in its power to sort out the problem. ''Drawing queries do come up and it's not uncommon for sites to make an error," she says. But in this case they are adamant that they are correct. Drivers must check their receipts before they sign them."

Dieseline managing director Mark Shepherd says he is happy that the fuel was drawn and that in any case Dieseline is in no way to blame for the incident. Long adds that Dieseline is still looking into the matter for Walker.

A spokesman fer CH Jones declined to comment.
