Waso Ltd. (1 Tribune Drive, Trinity Trading Estate, Sittirtgboume, Kent) market a sturdy steering lock which clamps to the steering column and is positioned by shearoff bolts which break off when fully tightened, making the steering lock a permanent fixture.

The Waso device not only locks and unlocks the steering but provides a multi-position ignition switch with progressive positions for switching "on" and "off" and, against spring pressure, the starter solenoid. With the Waso lock fitted the standard ignition switch is no longer used.

Removal of the exclusive Waso key from the lock releases a spring-loaded bolt which locates in a locking bush welded to the steering shaft. These steering locks cost £7 10s., plus fitting charge, and a similar device is available for locking gear levers costing £4 19s. 6d. plus fitting charge.

The Keyless Key Co. Ltd. (2-6 Occupation Road, Walworth, London, SEI7) produce a sizeable range of devices designed to perplex and thwart robbers. Their Auto Lock incorporates a five-letter code and a solenoid fuel lock, designed for diesel vehicles. Electrically operated slam locks and bar locks enable sliding doors, roller shutters or bonnets to be locked using a combination dial system or an exclusive key switch.

Open loads can be protected by independent battery-operated alarm systems of the intermittent type, and another system gives a fully automatic alarm which is proof against forgetful drivers, since the driver cannot get out of his cab without activating the system.

The Trico Neiman lock (Trico-Folberth Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex) is normally fitted as standard by manufacturers but they are available as extras on certain car and lorry designs. The Nein lock, more than 20 million of which an service, is approved by Interpol, and functions by positively locking both steer and ignition.
