ROM A SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT

THE strike of car delivery drivers of the Longbridge group of delivery agents in Birmingham (COMMERCIAL MOTOR, September 30) is likely to last for several weeks. Because they see no early end to the dispute, the 15 member firms of the group have delicensed all their transporter vehicles and cancelled the insurances on trade plates.

This means that even if the strike ended today, it would be several days before the men could start work again.

The official strike of 649 drivers has stopped all bulk deliveries and exports from BMC factories in the West Midlands. The men are stiking against redundancies of 333 —about 50 per cent of the total work force. The first notices took effect this week.

The employers have said they are willing to negotiate providing the men go back to work, but the Transport and General Workers' Union says they will go back providing this includes the redundant workers as well.
