All-steel A.R.P. Trailer

Unusual Body Construction Makes for Light Weight and Ease of Decontamination

I N the design of the Abbey low-loading A.R.P. trailer there are several praiseworthy features whiCh clearly ndicate that considerable thought has been devoted to its ievelopment. In the first place; it-provides maximum a..r.rying capacity within the limits of its wheel track, and )37 reason of its coarse-raeshwire body construction, decontamination is readily carried out. Another commendable feature of such a body is that whatever may be loaded on to the trailer it can be seen at a glance, no matter what position it may occupy.

No straight-through axle is employed, the wheels being mdependently mounted, with coil-spring suspension capable if being readily adjusted to meet load and operating :onditions.

The pressed-steel wheels, which carry 5.25 by 16 tyres, are mounted on taper-roller-bearing hubs, the shoes in the brake drums being controlled by the over-run of the towing bar. There is also a hand-operated brake.

The trailer is provided with three stabilizing jacks and these are found most convenient should it be necessary to remove a wheel.

Three open-top wirework lockers, 15 ins, wide by 9 ins. deep, are formed integrally with the body, one locker is 5 ft, 4 ins, long and the other two are 3 ft. 10 ins. long. Additionally, there are one large and two small wirework lockers in the sides, these having wirework 'doors hinged and opening outwards.

These lockers are intended for the stowage of foam extinguishers, 409 ft. of hose, stand-pipes and other neces sary A.R.P. equipment, so arranged on the trailer that a clear platform space, measuring 3 ft. 10 ins. by 2 ft. 9 ins., is available. These dimensions can be varied by a suitable rearrangement of the stowage space. If necessary, two steel runways, to take any type of motor pump, can be provided.

The tailboard is equipped with a folding stand, so that when dropped it forms an extension of the floor; thus, the loading of a motor pump or other piece of heavy equipment is facilitated, With an unladen weight of 6 cwt. the Abbey trailer is designed for a normal load capacity of 10 cwt., other models of 15-cwt. and 18-cwt. capacity will be available to order.

As an alternative, a three or four-stretcher ambulance body, with metal panel sides and canvas tilt, can be supplied. Other details, together with prices, are obtainable from Walfords Overseas, Ltd., Abbey House, Baker Street, London, N.W.I.
