Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

DESIGNERS of trailers have little opportunity to become stagnant in their ideas for the reason that they have to keep pace with the needs of so many different industries.

A case in point is the Dyson 8-ton low-loading tank trailer featured in the accompanying illustration. This is one of five machines, built through E.R.F.. Ltd., by R. A. Dyson and Co., Ltd., 76-80, Grafton Street, Liverpool, 8, for Ind Crave and Allsopp, Ltd.. the wellknown brewery concern.

The outstanding features of this trailer are that it provides for extremely low loading—the mean height being 2 ft. 9 ins.—and that the centre of gravity is such as to give maximum safety. The question of safety was stressed by the purchaser and special Girling brakes were designed by New Hudson, Ltd., with dimensions of 17 ins. by 5 ins., these are operated through an F. and J. vacuum cylinder.

In connection with the Dyson system of Ackerman steering, which is controlled through the drawbar, an ingenious type of wire-rope stop is introduced, in order to prevent over-lock and consequent strain of the steering mechanism. The wire ropes used to 136

achieve this are in. diameter and are so anchored at the front of the trailer that excessive lock causes one or the other to be drawn taut, and instead of the steering being stressed, the trailer is slewed over through the medium of the rope.

The tank used on this trailer is of 1,790 gallons capacity and is a product

of Thompson Bros. (Bilston), Ltd. It has two compartments, one having a capacity of 1,250 gallons and the other 540 gallons, each having its own filling and draw-off apparatus.

A 2-in. jacket of Alfol is provided. being covered with steel sheeting. The inside diameter of the tank is 4 ft. 9 ins. and the length 17 ft.
