Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Tachograph

Iwas very pleased to see the article (CM 24-30 Oct) celebrating the excellent work done by Clive Tanner which led to two people being jailed for conspiring to falsify tachograph records. However, I would like to correct two impressions that readers may have taken from the article.

First, this will definitely not be the last case of this kind. The Inspectorate is very clear that we should be seeking to target our work at the worst abuses in the industry. We are currently putting in place improved intelligence gathering and analysis capabilities so that we can focus our efforts more on such cases.

Second, if any pressure was ever put upon Clive Tanner to go for a lesser charge for cost reasons, it did not come from either senior management or the current management in his area. Of course, we will look at investigations as they proceed to check that what is likely to come out justified further investigation. However, if the evidence is there, we will not shrink from going for serious charges simply on grounds of cost.

Julian David Vehicle Inspectorate.
