Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Truck drivers have blocked the Polish-Ukrainian border post in protest at delays of more than three days to get into the former Soviet Union republic.

Operators have been given no explanation about the cause of the hold-up, but it is believed staff shortages are partly to blame.

Drivers are being forced to wait in milelong queues of lorries for more than 72 hours and the problems have meant journey times have doubled.

Isle of Sheppey-based Croome International Transport runs 45 vehicles on general haulage work including four a week to the Ukraine. Barry Soilleux says two of his vehicles have been caught on the border for four days and the hold-ups are costing time and money: "The drivers are very frustrated because they move only 10 yards an hour. A round trip would normally take five days but it has doubled at the moment and we are always fighting to get jobs done on time.

"It is getting worse all the time and we are going to try and use a different border even though the routes are less direct."
