of investment in training could push drivers' wages up over the coming year, says the Road Haulage Association.
The RHA's eastern division believes the number of drivers leaving the industry because of poor wages is creating a shortage of experienced artic drivers.
A lack of investment by transport companies in training over recent years also means younger drivers aren't qualified to drive large vehicles.
RHA eastern area officer John Waddons says a number of transport firms are having to employ firemen at weekends.
He adds: "Lorry drivers are given £250,000 loads to look after and paid only £4.20 an hour—you'd pay cleaners more than that"
