Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE " do-it-yourself " village bus service, planned by Eastern Counties was launched this week in Norfolk. Its object is to provide a self-help bus service for communities too small to support a conventional service. It is financed by Norfolk County Council.

Six villages have been selected for the experiment: Hunworth, Stody, Gunthorpe, Bale, Brinton and Sherrington. The residents are providing a team of volunteer drivers and are also contributing to the management of the bus service through their representatives on the village bus committee.

The starting date was delayed until now because at least 12 volunteer drivers needed to pass the psv driving test.

The current timetable was drawn up by Eastern Counties's traffic department on the basis of the company's original market research and a survey recently undertaken by the village bus committee. But they feel that demand may have altered now that more is known about the proposals through public meetings and the publicity that the scheme had generated.

The timetable caters for: • School journeys on Mondays to Fridays linking Sherrington and Thornage with Brinton school.

• Morning and afternoon shopping journeys to Holt on Tuesdays and Fridays with connections for Eastern Counties's existing service to Sheringham.

• Morning and afternoon shopping journeys to Fakenham on Thursdays.

• Once-monthly Saturday connections with Eastern Counties's existing service to Norwich.

Fares have been based on a unit price Of 5p with a maximum of 20p. Drivers will be required to fill in a simple waybill which will record the number of passengers and the takings. The cash tin, with its roll of unused tickets, waybills and cash, will be changed daily.

Journeys other than those allowed for in the approved timetables may be undertaken, provided they are notified to the village bus committee. A list of likely destinations and timings which would not compete with existing services of either Eastern Counties or independent operators is to be supplied by the bus company and the county council.

Private hire and excursions outside the six villages may also he undertaken by the village bus under the authority of a tours and excursions licence held by Eastern Counties.

For this new service Eastern Counties obtained a Ford Transit minibus with a Deansgate 12-seater conversion. The bus will be subjected monthly to a detailed inspection •by Eastern Counties engineering staff at one of the company's workshops, and routine maintenance will be carried out at a local Ford agent.
