Engineering Co Ltd D23, K3—Cameron and Campbell Ltd. THE NEW Volkswagen LT forward-oontrol light truck range catering for payloads of up to 2 tonnes makes its UK debut at Kelvin Hall, There are three models in the range, and the middleweight LT 31, with a normal payload rating of 1,778kg (35cwt), is the first model to be 'available in the UK and then in chassis-cab not integral van form.

Four LT 31 chassis-cabs are on the stands fitted with a steel dropside body, an alloy Luton-head van, an insulated box and an electro-hydraulically activated tipper.

The 2.5m (8.2ft) wheelbase forward-control chassis is powered by a water-cooled petrol engine sited between the driver and passenger seat towards the rear of the cab. The two-litre (122cuiri) engine, which TUMS on low octane two-star petrol, drives through a conventional clutch and four-speed synchromesh gearbox to the live rear axle.

Independent coil spring With double wishbones, radius rods and anti-roll bar suspension is specified at the front, with 'Single-leaf springs and 'helpers at the rear. Telescopic Shock absorbers are fitted all round.

Dual-circuit servo-assisted hydraulic brakes with discs at the front and drums at the rear are specified and a load sensitive regulator on the rear prevents wheel locking during braking.

The vehicle 'is mounted on cross-braced, double-box frame chassis with welded crossmembers. Crumple zones give progressive deformation during impact.

Gab features such as the seats, instruments and controls have been taken from the VW private car range.

Apart from the LT, VW has three versions of the one-ton commercial on Show.

The 1Standard van with its air-cooled engine and sideloading door has a 3.96sqm (44sqft) load area and 5cum (177cuft) payload volume.

Double the load ,space of the standard is achieved with the stretched version of the 1-ton van. It has the same mechanical specification as the Standard model.

The VW pick-up has a 4cum (45sq1t) rear platform area with a lockable compartment for carrying tools or equipment, beneath the platform.
