THE EXHIBITS from Mercedes Benz range from a motor caravan based on the L 206 D to the 1626S for 32-ton opera tion in the UK. The 1626S is from the New Generation range featuring the cab which was designed to look small without sacrificing anything in the way of interior crew space. The new Dusseldorf-built L 407 D Transporter is shown by Western Autos of Edinburgh with its more powerful engine and improved gearbox. The 407 is powered by a fourcylinder overhead camshaft diesel engine, the OM 616, which develops 48kW (65bhp) at 4,200rpm. The gearbox has been improved by alterations to the synchronisation and by reinforced toothing. Along with the 1626 S, the heavy end of the market is represented by the long-serving LPS 1418—now fitted with spring parking brakes.
