THIS SHOW marks the UK debut for Ford's Transcontinental heavy truck range, the improved Transit and the facelifted Escort Van.

There are two HA 4227 Transcontinental tractive units each designed for operation at 42 tonnes (41.3 tons) gcw and each is fitted with a Cummins NTC 335E six-cylinder 14-litre (854cuin) turbocharged diesel engine producing 201kW (272 bhp) at 1,950rpm (BS AU 141a: net installed). Both vehicles are also specified with a nine-speed Fuller RT 9509C gearbox and Rockwell axles and are fitted with the optional ,454-litre (100gal) fuel tanks. The HA 4227 on the Croft Bodybuilding & Engineering stand is equipped with a full sleeper-cab having twin bunks.

The D1614 tipper being shown by Millars of Falkirk is powered by a Ford six-litre (366cuin) turbocharged diesel engine developing 105kW (140 bhp) at 2,400rpm and 454Nm (3351bft) torque at 1,700rpm (both outputs to BS AU 141a: net installed).

The 16-tonner is also specified with the Ford six-speed synchromesh gearbox and rear axle and is shown with a 6.9 cum (9cuyd) Telehoist dropside tipper body with front end ram.

The DA 2014 tractive unit, also on the Millars stand, is derived from the DA 2114 unit. It is designed to operate at just below 20 tonnes gew to enable operators to avoid the 450km (281 miles) EEC daily driving limit that comes into force on January 1, 1976, for vehicles grossing more than 20 tonnes. The vehicle is powered by the Ford's six-litre (366cuin) turbocharged diesel engine and is specified with a Ford six-speed synchromesh gearbox. The optional 215-litre (47.3ga1) fuel tank is fitted instead of the 120-litre (26.4 gal) standard.

The D0707 shown by Wylie's, has a legal plated weight of just less than 7.5 tonnes (7.4 tons). From January 1 the vehicle weight requirement for hgv licence changes from 3 tons unladen to 7.5 tonnes (7.4 tons) gvw. The D0707 has a 4.2-litre (256cuin) Ford four-cylinder diesel engine producing 56.7 kW (76bhp) at 2,800rpm and 252.2Nm (1861bft) torque at 1,600rpm (BS AU 141a: net installed) and a four-speed gearbox is specified with synchromesh on top three ratios.

After an uncertain start the A-Series integrated van range has been re-introduced and is now built at WillenhalL Staffs. The A0609 shown by Alexanders of Edinburgh features the Ford six-cylinder York diesel engine. The 3.5-litre (214cuin) engine produces 66.5kW (899bhp) and the drive-line includes a Ford 4-310 constant-mesh gearbox and 5.13 to 1 rear axle.

The A-Series van is designed for delivery services and has a low--806mm (31.7in)—loading height; the double rear doors hinge through 270deg and latch against the body sides.

The Transit 90 with 1.6-litre four-cylinder in-line petrol engine, exhibited by Alexanders (Edinburgh), replaces the 1.7litre V4-engined version of the same model.

The in-line engine is claimed to be easier on fuel than the V4 and to give a comparable performance. It has been tailored for the Transit range and has three-piece oil rings on the pistons, positive valve rotation for even wear and a sonic idle carburetter designed for optimum fuel consumption.

In common with the 76 modifications to Transit, the show model has a facelifted dash and greater driver legroom.

New front-end styling and improved trim were incorporated on the Escort van range earlier this year and the Escort 30 model on the Millars of Falkirk stand is a popularised version. By deleting such things as the rubber mats, interior lamp and passenger seat Ford has trimmed E52 from the price of the standard Escort 30. The vehicle payload capacity is unchanged at 300kg (6cwt).
