PLATFORM semi-trailers can now be equipped to allow selfloading of mobile plant and lump loads due to the development of hydraulically folding front supports by Merriworth Engineering of Erith and Tractor Research Ltd of Coventry.
The 20 ton folding supports are called Jumbolegs and they allow the semi-trailer to kneel down at the front to allow loads to be either winched or driven aboard.
Operation of the legs is by a small Petters diesel-hydraulic power unit although other methods of providing the hydraulic power—e le et ri c motor, air motor or manual eventually be available.
