STRICTER rules covering the transport of radioactive substances were announced by the DoE last week. The Radioactive Substances (Road Transport Workers) (Great Britain) (Amendment) Regulations 1975 set out new minimum distances which "Yellow Label" packages must be carried from the driver.

MOVES to impose a 241cm/h (15mph) speed limit on tankers carrying dangerous chemicals on certain roads have been started by Warrington council.

The council feels that tankers servicing two local chemical works are presently travelling too fast, though a survey showed average speeds to be in "the mid-20s mph."

A TWICE-WEEKLY road transport service has been started between Bradford and Monchengladbach, West Germany. The two towns are " twinned " and have substantial mutual trade. The service is being operated by McGregor Cory Europe and vehicles leave Bradford on Wednesday and Friday, arriving in Germany on the following Friday and Tuesday, respectively. Goods regularly carried include copper tubes, furnishing fabrics, woollen clothes, gloves, fishing tackle, surgical instruments and ships' spares.

HALF-YEAR profits for United Carriers in the period ended August 2 jumped to £753,000 compared with £566,000 for the same period in 1974. Turnover was up from £4m in 1974 to nearly £5m. An interim dividend of 0.56025p per share has been declared, compared with 0.525p in 1974.

A SPECIAL container shipping service operated for Containerway and Roadferry Ltd by Transport Ferry Service to Belfast is being switched from Preston to Heysham. The change will give a strictly timetabled service, impossible from Preston because •of tidal conditions,
