FlFTY years ago, the manufacture of Ferodo facings for clutches and brakes was begun in a shed measuring 9 ft. square. That shed is still in existence and is illustrated above—a monument to enterprise.
To-day, Ferodo, Ltd., has a large works at Chapel-en-le-Frith, Stockport, employing many hundreds of workers. The existing plant is, however, inadequate to deal with the demand for Ferodo products and a big extension is being made, as shown in the upper picture on the right. A large section of the hillside has had to be excavated to enable the site to be levelled.
Labour is drawn from a wide area and special services are provided by the North-Western Road Car Co., Ltd. Vehicles are marshalled in the Ferodo company's own bus station, which, with its queue barriers and clearly marked stands, compares favourably with those provided by many municipalities and bus operators. Scenes similar to that depicted in the lower picture on the right can be seen on any weekday at 5.30 p.m., when the works closes for the night.
