Words / Images: Kevin Swallow WITH A SELECTION OF ageing trailers on the Rugby-based Manor Bakeries fleet, The Lloyd Fraser Group, which runs the Company's transport contract, has opted to Move from outright purchase to fixed-term leasing to ensure disposal.

Matthew Preston, general manager for The Lloyd Fraser Group, says there are 120 trailers on the fleet, some being nine or 10 years old and in need of replacement.

The first two trailers to go on to eight-year fixed-lease term contracts are tandem-axle Don-Bur Teardrop trailers, each wth a floating deck and constructed with Don-Bur's new narrow high-density polyethylene foam (HDPE) panels.

These are the first trailers with these panels to be sold by the trailer manufacturer.

"These trailers are the first two on fixed-term lease. The previous trailers were bought if and when. What this guarantees is a replacement programme," Preston says. "If these trailers prove successful, and we think they will, well order another batch ahead of our busiest period, which is during October, November and December.

"By purchasing 15 trailers [for example] that adds 780 pallets [to the fleet]. Then we can dispose of the older trailers in January. when things slow down," he continues.

0 The 7.5mm-thick HDPE panels, called Blade by Don-Bur, are 21mm narrower than GRP. It means the firm can load GKN pallets sideways throughout the trailer, which will increase capacity from 44 to 52 pallets.

HDPE is also 5kg lighter per square metre than GRP, making theTeardrop trailer 400kg lighter than a GAP equivalent.

Preston is testing the trailer over specific routes to see if the design can help reduce Manor Bakeries' £2.25m annual fuel bill.
