Andrew Bearryman, managing director of Portsmouthbased Freight Transport, believes that the drop in UK hauliers' performances comes down to cost. He says: "Cost is the driving force. People are not prepared to give an English haulier a lot of money compared to giving a foreign haulier a little bit. But what I can't work out is why our operating costs are higher than those on the Continent. The euro is currently trading at around €1.08 to the pound, compared to this time last year, when it was nearer €1.30.
"But some people are prepared to pay for service. We take a careful look at our costs to make sure our drivers are running as efficiently and as leanly as possible."
For international haulage to survive in Britain. cost efficiencies, it seems, have never been more important.
