• Regarding your feature on spot checks (CM 9-15 April), we are a small company with four vehicles, but are proud of our record on servicing and driving. On 19 February, one of our trucks, a 12-year-old Daf, was stopped at a roadside check.

A recommendation was given for bolts to be replaced on an anchor bracket. A rear tyre was then found to be punctured (the lorry was empty at the time). When the driver was asked if he checked the vehicle before he left the depot, he replied: "No, it's not my usual lorry, but I expect the fitter did." He was cautioned and I have been charged with allowing the vehicle on to the road without proper checks.

How petty can you get? And they expect us to be agreeable to them. All I say is, play fair and let us go about our work without harassment.

Andy Gorman Dawlish, Devon.
