Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• CM guarantees free publicity for any operator unfortunate enough to become a victim of truck crime. It may not get your truck, trailer or components back, but at least it could make life harder for the thieves attempting to use or sell your property.

• Owner-driver KJ Woodbine Transport is offering a £500 reward after his trailer was stolen from the port of Felixstowe when thieves cut through the padlock on the kingpin.

The trailer was in a rented yard in the docks and the gates were open because three other hauliers use the premises 24 hours a day.

The loss has hit Woodbine hard: "As an owner-driver the loss of my only trailer has come as a great blow with haulage being in such a depressed state. I am now having to hire a trailer and also pay the HP on a trailer that I no longer have."

He adds: "If someone broke into the local bank and stole £12,000 cash the police would have shown a great deal more interest than they did when somebody stole my trailer".

The lost 12.2m tri-axle trailer is red and was made by Shiadot in 1988. The chassis number is 33E/88/017. An unusual feature is that the chassis tapers from the rear axle to the rear of the platform.

• Police are still searching for a stolen trailer after a tractive unit taken with it was found burnt out in Yorkshire.

The 12.2m triaxle trailer has an orange Atlas 3006 crane, which is distinctive as both sides are damaged. There is a brick grab and donkey engine. The trailer number is A052164 and chassis number 554.

Gwyn Owen of Bethesda, Gwynedd also lost his MAN 4x2 articulated unit when thieves removed it and the trailer from Penrhyn Quarries at Bethesda. The thieves loaded the trailer with 20 boxes of slates, worth around £30,000, before driving off. The tractive unit was found burnt out and without the trailer on April 20, two days after its theft, at Skipton, North Yorkshire.

The 2421C Cargo, registration number G895 APL, was taken from the Lincoln-based company on the night of April 27. The company name and logo is in yellow on both doors and on the front panel.

The Neville Charrold alloy body had a split rear door in yellow with the vehicle's registration and the company's name on the sides.

• Thieves have struck again in the Llanelli region — this time stealing two Foden tractive units with a combined value of 240,000.

The two 6x4 units were stolen from the yard of John Evans and Sons (Llanelli) on the night of April 25. The vehicles, registration numbers E319 TTH and F136 ATH, are both white with a maroon horizontal panel and have the company name, in reflective signwriting, on the front grille. "Transport Association" logos are displayed on the front corners. Their chassis numbers are 400441 and 401324 and engine numbers are 23202112 and 23206043.

The theft of the vehicles follows last week's report of the loss of a £30,000 Foden tipper from neighbouring haulier R Thomas and Son.

Peter Evans, managing director of Evans, says the thefts are not a major problem at the moment because work was light last week. He has another 20 vehicles.

But he says the police have not been responsive enough. He argues they have not reacted to the information that one of his drivers was questioned near Bristol recently by a man in a Toyota Cruiser who wanted to know the details of the company's fleet.

• An H-registered Ford Cargo has been stolen from SLD Rollalong's Rainham site in Essex. The vehicle, reg H956 CCN, has the company's name in blue lettering on the white cab. The chassis number is SBCCXXCCDCLR37145 and engine number is LR 37145.

• Barnsley-based haulage contractor Chas Braham & Sons (Chapelton) has been hit by further misfortune with last week's theft of a Mercedes eight-wheeler.

The vehicle was stolen from its customer's yard in Garforth, Leeds between 19:00 and 22:00hrs on April 28. The vehicle is navy blue and the registration is H125 SGG.

The owners are said to be "absolutely distraught", according to Bill Ellis from Nottinghamshire-based agricultural and general haulage contractor F Wm L Ellis.

Ellis says: "This is the latest of several thefts or breakdowns."
