TTRADE-PLATE drivers in the Midi lands—the men who deliver new commercial vehicles and cars to distributors, commercial bodybuilders and the docks—have been awarded a five-day week by the Industrial Court. The Court's judgment, published this week, will affect 630 men employed in motor vehicle delivery by the Longbridge Group of Delivery Agents, which comprises 17 companies in the Birmingham, Cambridge, Liverpool and Oxford areas.

The Transport and General Workers' Union, which represents the men, also brought a claim on behalf of 187 ferry and yard staff employed by the same companies. They claimed in each case an increase on the hourly rate of 5s. 9d., the payment of time and a half for Saturday work with a minimum payment of four hours and, in the case of the plate drivers, a five-day week.

Apart from conceding the claim for a five-day week from Monday to Friday, the Court, under its president Sir Roy Wilson, QC, awarded both plate drivers and ferry drivers an increase of 2d, an hour in the basic and compounded hourly rates to bring them to 5s. 5d. and 5s. lid, respectively.

It also ruled that payment for all time worked on Saturday shall be at the rate of time and a third, calculated on the revised basic rate of 5s. 5d, an hour, subject to a minimum payment of four hours. The compounded rate of 5s. 11d. will continue to be paid in respect of all hours worked from Monday to Friday in the case of the plate drivers, and in respect of the first 42 hours worked in any week in the case of ferry drivers.

The award is back-dated in effect to February 23, 1965.
