Value for Money IT is no idle boast to describe British commercial vehicles as world _theaters, because that is just what they are as evidenced by their export record. In the past 12 years more than 1,750,000 commercial vehicles produced in this country have been sold abroad, earning More than I ,250m. In anyone's language this' is a major ,export achievement. Last year was a record one. No less than 168,606 vehicles and chassis worth some ÂŁ126m. were sold. This substantially surpassed 1961, the previous record year, when Britain was the world's leading exporter. All the indications are that 1965 is going to be another splendid year. if not a record one.

Obviously every design (unless price is genuinely no object) must essentially be a compromise and this is true of all commercial vehicles, wherever they are produced. It would be a starry-eyed person indeed who claimed that British vehicles were perfect; but the demand for them. from all quarters of the globe, testifies to their value. Their quality must steadily be improving, too, as there is fierce competition in nearly all markets from Continental and American manufacturers— and now the Japanese must be rated as major competitors (even, perhaps eventually, in Europe).

The effect of strong competition is to enforce an unrelenting search' for improved designs and higher quality and service. Who would deny that this is as it should be'? It is certainly true that successful exports must be based on a strong home market; but the obverse side of the coin shows that as long as this competitive stimulus remains, operators at home can be sure that design will not stagnate.
