Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Reports to hand since we went to press with our last issue indicate that the current W.O. subsidy tests are going quite smoothly up to the time of writing. On Tuesday of last week the trials were continued over route " J," which is a hilly one, via Aldershot and Petworth up Hazel Hill-1 in 6. A stop for lunch was made at Midhurst. All the cars did well during the day.

On Wednesday, the 29th ult., a ding-dong sort of run, from Aldershot to Dorchester and return, was carried out. The Commercar started first and maintained the lead throughout the day—it was closely followed by the Thornycroft, then the Dennis, the Leyland and the R.C.W. in the order named. On Thursday, the 30th, a short run only was undertaken, this being route " B " from Aldershot to Staines and Sunbury. Some of the observing officers span out the day by making long stops for breakfast and lunch. All cars did well.

Friday's route was from Aldershot to Woolwich, via Pebblecombe, Westerham and Titsey Hills. Each of the ears climbed Pebblecombe without trouble, and there were no untoward incidents. Saturday saw the machines running over route " T " through Rochester to Bearstead, returning through Hollingbourne, Maidstone, Wrotham and Sidcup. The Woolwich-built machine fell out of the running at Gravesend through a badly-damaged tire and returned to depot for a new wheel. On Sunday night the Maudslay put in its first appearance, and it joined the other contestants on the road on Monday. It did the journey from Coventry under official observation.

Monday proved another uneventful day, but it would appear that the average speed of the machines is getting less. This is evidently due to the desire to keep the consumption within the required limits. The first of the customary circuits of London in traffic took place on Monday.

The running so far is quite consistent and well up to schedule, although the -Woolwich car is undoubtedly proving the slowest of the fleet. The Maudslay is fitted with a test body and seat, and in certain details does not conform to the subsidy requirements.

The Rotax carburetter is to be tested on a, 30 Daimler during the current week.
