THE GOVERNMENT'S car-sharing scheme shows no signs of soh ing the major problems facing London Transport, maintained Oppc sition transport spokesman Albert Booth, in the Commons las week.

The study, commissioned by the Transport and Road Researc' Laboratory, showed that the scheme's main effect had been to drab passengers away from the bus service and towards cars that wouli be used in any case, added Mr Booth. The only solution was greate investment and a policy of lower fares, he said.

But Transport Secretary Norman Fowler replied that car-sharim was never envisaged as a solution in itself to the problems facin London and the rural areas.
